Autumn is Coming Part 1

Read Time: 4 mins

French philosopher Albert Camus once said; “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” Having said that, he was probably never too occupied with clearing the leaves form his lawn. For the rest of us, however, Autumn is the time to rake the leaves, pick up sticks and get your garden ready for winter.

The good news is that Clearabee knows a thing or two about garden clearances. As the UK’s largest clearance company, we can help you with our range of rubbish removal services and give you a few tips and tricks along the way. First up…

Why clear your fallen leaves?

If left to Mother Nature’s devices, leaves will eventually degrade into mulch which provides nutrients, in turn promoting strong root development throughout your lawn. However, if leaves are left, they also present a problem with regards to slippery surfaces, with paths and patios being a particular problem.

However, that’s not where the issues end. Leaves that are left to linger can also cause draining issues throughout your lawn and could potentially result in flooding by clogging your drains. Add to that the fact that it’s the kind of behaviour that has curtains twitching and neighbours talking, then it’s time to get your leaves gone.

How to clear your fallen leaves

Wet leaves are heavier and therefore more difficult (and expensive) to move, so for the easiest way to get them moved, make sure you wait until they’re dry before you leap into action. Depending on your budget, garden size and physical fitness (or enthusiasm) you can employ a rake, a leaf blower or leaf vacuum to get your leaves nicely piled up.

Some people choose to employ a more hands-on technique when it comes to dead leaves and the dirty ground. If a specialist piece of machinery isn’t available, then picking up leaves with only gloves as protection or a hand-held rake might be your only option. If this is the case, you should make sure that you observe manual handling techniques at all times so as not to cause an injury or exacerbate an existing one.

Throughout most locations in the UK, green waste bins are usually only a fortnightly collection and often incur an additional charge. If your green bin is already full of tree clippings or the grass remnants from the last mow of the year, you can be left with piles of leaves waiting around to be binned, being blown around or decomposing in a bin bag. Not if you’ve got a Skip Bag from Clearabee.

Getting ready for Autumn with Clearabee

A Skip Bag is a polywoven rubbish removal bag which is more flexible, cost-effective and environmentally friendly than a skip. Skip Bags are delivered by post, usually via a next-day delivery and as they are flat packed, they can be stored away until you are ready to use them.

Skip Bags are also lightweight and easily movable, which gives you the added advantage that you can take the bag straight to the leaf pile to make collecting them that little bit easier.

Much like your recycling and your domestic waste bin, it makes good sense to stamp down your waste every so often too. That way, you can make sure you pack more into your skip bag. Once it’s full, you can always get extra use out of your bag by filling it with tree cuttings and hedge clippings or unwanted garden items such as broken plant pots, old hose pipe reels or anything that’s clogging up the shed.

Once your Skip Bag is full to the ‘Level Load’ line, get in touch with Clearabee via our hassle-free booking system or log in to your account. You can book your designated-day collection to suit you and as long as your Skip Bag is left within 4 meters of the road and is accessible, we’ll take care of the rest for you.

We’ll send you an SMS when we’re on our way to collect your Skip Bag and you’ll receive a tracking notification so you can keep up to date with our progress. Once your Skip Bag has been taken to a local Waste Transfer Station, you’ll be emailed a Waste Transfer Note which will let you know where your garden waste has been ended up and how much of your collection was diverted from landfill, if appropriate.

On average, Clearabee divert from landfill over 95% of all that we collect and only make use of Waste Transfer Stations which have the most efficient recycling programmes in place. Where lighter Skip Bag collections are required, we will dispatch our ‘Man and Van’ style clearance teams instead of an HGV.

These ‘Man and Van’ style vehicles are constructed on an ultra-light chassis which reduces both fuel consumption and carbon emissions, whilst any C02 emitted is offset by our reforestation project. This project consists of 2 UK forests, 19,674 trees and over 1,886 tonnes of offset carbon. So your garden isn’t the only thing that’s green.

Book your Skip Bag today and be sure to check out our Garden Clearance guide for more information. Check the second part of our Autumn is Coming blog series.
