FAQs

Southend-on-Sea skip hire FAQs

When selecting a skip there are several things to consider, including which skip size and type is the most suitable, and whereabouts you plan to place it.

We have detailed the most popular skips with our FAQ section, but we can hire out specialist skips if requested.

View all FAQs

The ‘Midi’ skip is 4 cubic yards in size and is usually the smallest skip available. ‘Builders’ skips are 6 to 8 cubic yards in size, whilst ‘Maxi’ and extra-large skips are 10 - 12 cubic yards.

The largest skips are commercial hires which include lockable skips, enclosed skips and Roll On, Roll Off (RORO) containers. These are costed according to transport and tonnage at the point of ordering.

These waste streams cannot be disposed of in a skip without previous authorisation:

Excessively heavy or dense waste

WEEE items and white goods

Hazardous waste streams such as fire extinguishers, monitors and laptops.

Food wastage

Plasterboard/gypsum waste

Solvents, chemicals and paint

Skip hire can have additional costs depending on the situation, but these can be dealt with by forward planning. These are:

Overloading – it is a legal requirement that the skip must be safe to transport. If you exceed the level load line, you could be charged extra for a waste journey.

Wasted journeys - these charges can occur when there is not suitable access to the skip for either drop-off or collection.

Skip permits & parking suspensions - if your skip needs to be placed on the road you will need a skip permit. If you plan on using a parking space that requires a permit or paid parking, you will also need a parking suspension.

Prohibited items - hazardous waste streams must not be disposed of in a skip and will incur a substantial additional cost. These include, but are not exclusive to, freezers, monitors and chemicals, solvents and liquids.

Southend-on-Sea's residents will need a skip permit to place a skip on a public road. The cost of a skip permit varies depending on the local authority but we can apply for the skip permit on your behalf and include the additional cost along with your skip hire.

If you plan to place your skip in a Pay and Display or permit-only parking space, you will need a parking suspension in addition to a skip permit. Parking suspensions need Southend-on-Sea Council to suspend the space and this will be charged for each day that the space is out of service.
