The smallest skip that is widely available is a ‘Midi’ skip (4 cubic yards). Increasing in size are 6 - 8 cubic yards ‘Builders’ skips, followed by ‘Maxi’ and extra-large skips, which range from 10 - 12 yards.
Larger still are specialist skips for large commercial projects. These include lockable skips and Roll On, Roll Off (RORO) containers and these are usually priced by transport and tonnage rate.
Skips are generally a flexible waste removal solution. However, there are restrictions on what waste streams can go into each skip and the mixing of certain waste types. Broadly speaking, standard household and bulky business waste can be thrown into a skip, as well as standard garden and construction waste streams.
These items cannot be removed by a skip without prior arrangement: white goods/large electrical items, hazardous waste such as fluorescent lighting tubes, fridges, TV’s and monitors, food waste, plasterboard and gypsum waste, chemicals and solvents.
You will require a skip permit from your local council if you intend to situate your skip on a public road. The costs vary and are dependent upon each local authority but in the majority of cases, we can apply for your skip permit and include the additional cost in your order.
If your skip is due to be placed in an area which has permit-only parking or if the parking space is Pay and Display, you will require a parking suspension in addition to a skip permit.
Parking suspensions are usually charged on a day-by-day basis and require the council to place a notice to suspend the parking space and this increases the cost considerably.
