Old Sofa Removal For Free

Read Time: 4 mins

As the UK’s largest in-house clearance company, Clearabee knows a thing or two about sofa removal. One thing we know is that not everyone is willing or able to pay to have their old sofa removed. With that in mind, let’s have a look at some of the best ways that you can have your old sofa removed for free.

Old Sofa Removal by Charities

As much as some people are unwilling or unable to afford having their old sofa removed, the same can be said of people who are looking for a sofa. Charity furniture shops are a lifeline for many households all across the nation and the re-sale and re-use of furniture is not only of benefit to those for whom brand new is not an option, but also of benefit to the charity itself and the causes it supports.

Most high streets across the UK are home to several charity shops, ranging from the smaller, independent stores to the local branches of national charities. Those shops which stock furniture often also provide collection services themselves are a good place to start your search. An even better place to start is our location pages; they’ll help you find a local charity which will be able to handle your old sofa removal for free.

Often, the only criteria that you’ll need to satisfy is that the furniture is in a resellable condition with the Fire Safety Label still attached for the sake of compliance. Some charities may apply a small fee to remove the sofa from the inside of your property so for a completely free service, you will need to arrange the safe removal of the sofa yourself.

All charity collection services vary, but some may operate with a two-week waiting period before the collection can take place, whereas others may be able to be more responsive. In any case, it’s always best to check with the appropriate charity before removing your furniture from your property or arranging the delivery of new furniture. The last thing you want is to have too many places to sit and not enough room to stand, whilst a sofa which is left outside in the elements will be even more difficult to responsibly dispose of.

Old Sofa Removal by Local Authorities

A little further away from ‘free’, but certainly still on the cost-effective side, are sofa collection services which are operated by local authorities. Most local councils across the country operate a sofa collection service which costs anywhere between £23 and £63, whereas some operate a free collection service if you satisfy certain criteria. As with the charitable collections, it’s important to consult your council’s website before you order replacement furniture or remove old furniture from your property.

Availability is usually a first come, first served basis so there may be some waiting involved and collection dates are usually dependent on demand. Some councils operate a rota where free collections take place in the same location every two weeks or two months. In almost all cases, councils operate a collection only service (unless you are elderly or registered disabled) so you will need to arrange the removal of the sofa from your property before it can be picked up.

Old Sofa Removal by Clearabee

Clearabee are proud to count both DFS and Sofology as our exclusive customers so if you purchase your new suite from either of these retailers, then you can be sure that your old sofa is in good hands, for a small additional charge.

DFS’ Sofa Rescue service can be added to your furniture order. This service enables Clearabee to remove up to three pieces of furniture from either the indoors or outdoors of your property and ensure that at least 95% of the furniture collected is diverted from landfill. As with all of Clearabee’s collections, we also offset the carbon emissions of our services via our reforestation project.

Sofology’s Sofa Rescue initiative works in very much the same way, with Clearabee collecting customers’ old sofas and settees before the delivery of their beautiful, brand-new ones. From there, a customer’s old sofa is transferred to a local waste disposal station before being recycled to the highest percentage rate possible.

However, if you’ve already got your brand-new three-piece suite, or if you’re simply trying to clear some space, then Clearabee can responsibly remove your old sofa for you. In many cases, this can even be done on the very same day and in every case, we’ll supply you with a digital Waste Transfer Note which records the recycling rate and final destination of your furniture. This means that you can be sure you’re doing your bit for the planet. All whilst putting your feet up.
