Lockdown Baby Boom and Clearing your Spare Room

Read Time: 4 mins

One early prediction at the beginning of lockdown was that the UK was heading for a baby boom which would rival that which following World War 2. What does this have to do with the UK’s largest waste clearance company, you ask? There are going to be a lot of spare rooms that need clearing out so they’re ready to be turned into nurseries.

The Times recently reported that a baby boom has failed to materialise as of yet and that the reverse is true; that a baby bust is actually the result of the UK lockdown. Whereas the BBC reports that one street in Bristol is home to 6 women who are all recently pregnant and all live on the same side of the street. Either way, here’s how Clearabee can help clear the way ready for the little one’s arrival.

Spare Room Clearances

Whether your spare room is a ready-made bedroom that’s awaiting visitors, a recently-converted office for remote working or a space for boxes of old photographs, clothes and trinkets… if you need to convert it into a nursery you’ve got a big clearance job on your hands.

The biggest job is often deciding what you want to keep and what you want to clear out. It’s always worth asking yourself a few questions: have I got room for this? Is there sentimental value? When was the last time I used this? Only you will know the answers to these questions but you may have some tough decisions to make.

The next job is to clearly separate the items you want to keep and the items you want to clear and this is where Clearabee can offer you our expertise. If you decide to book a ‘Man and Van’ clearance, then you can simply leave the unwanted items in your spare room and let us take care of the rest. You can either take photographs of the unwanted items and send it to us so that we can provide you with a quote, or you can simply pay the flat call-out fee of £59.99 and our waste operatives can attend your property and quote to remove the unwanted items there and then.

30 minutes of reasonable labour is included in our ‘Man and Van’ prices so our friendly clearance teams will be happy to remove your items, whether they’re upstairs or downstairs and as long as it is safe to do so. We’ll wear shoe coverings when attending your property and in line with government regulations, we’ll ask you to stay in a separate room whilst we clear your spare room and we’ll sign the job off once you’re satisfied to keep our service contactless.

Bulky Waste Clearances

If your spare bedroom is due to be turned into the new baby room, then you’re likely looking to get rid of bed frames, mattresses and wardrobes and the like. Not only are these kinds of items difficult to responsibly dispose of in the first place, but it can often be a two-person job just to remove them from your home before you even think about getting them to your Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Once again, this is where Clearabee’s ‘Man and Van’ clearances make the most sense, both in terms of cost and convenience. For bulky and hard-to-handle items we’ll send a team of two waste operatives to remove the items from inside your property before disposing of them responsibly. Mattresses, in particular, are difficult to get rid of in an environmentally-friendly way and require specialist dismantling to ensure as much is diverted from landfill as possible.

If you have the labour and the vehicle to transport your old mattress to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre, you still may find that the centre will not accept your mattress or you could end up having to pay an additional charge for the service. Clearabee, however, can make sure that at least 95% of the unwanted items we remove are diverted from landfill, making sure that you’re doing your part for the planet.

WEEE Clearances

When it comes to WEEE clearances involving laptops, monitors and TVs, Clearabee’s ‘Man and Van’ service is once again the most convenient service. If you were to hire a skip or a purchase a skip bag you would be prohibited from mixing certain waste streams such as those all commonly found in a spare room together.

However, Clearabee’s “Man and Van’ clearances can separate these items upon collection and ensure that all the whole collection is disposed of responsibly. To that effect, we issue all customers with a Waste Transfer Note once their collection reaches its end destination and the note describes what has been collected, where it’s been removed to and what the landfill diversion rate is (at least 95% on average).

Clearabee’s Waste Calculator

A great way to decide which service is the most suitable and cost-effective for your spare room clearance is by using our waste calculator. Clearabee’s waste calculator can be used to itemise clearances across the whole house and garden but with nurseries in mind, let’s take a look at spare rooms.

If your spare room is currently an office you can look at removing a study desk, an office chair, a lamp, a laptop and a storage unit before the waste calculator presents you with a price and the most appropriate clearance option. In this case, to remove the items mentioned, it would cost £134.99 to clear 3 cubic yards via our ‘Man and Van’ service from the West Midlands area.

Costs may vary in other parts of the county so do feel free to add items to your basket and enter your postcode to receive your online estimation. Also, take a look at how we responsibly remove your waste whilst still helping the environment by checking out our environmental credentials page.

Use our hassle-free online service to book your spare room clearance now or get in touch with Clearabee to get a bespoke quote and we’ll help clear the way for your new arrival.
